Tournament
Within each course are a series of online competition - Tournaments. Students do the series of exercises for a grade and at the same time compete with classmates for extra credit (number of correct problems and/or speed in completion). We have found that the competition and promise of extra credit is a motivator, which has a positive impact on retention and depth of understanding. Once tournaments are used, students do the homework multiple times in hopes of winning and getting extra credit.

Music Literacy is an
online learning system that uses a gaming model to reinforce repetitive layers of learning. The system was created by Dr. Momilani Ramstrum, Ph.D., Professor of Music at San Diego Mesa College. She has used the Music Literacy system with her own students for over a decade and has observed a
dramatic increase in retention and persistence, and has found it especially beneficial in promoting equity. Students entering college with less background preparation are able to succeed using a 'keep working until you succeed' model of learning.
